Seek the Lord and Live
Read Amos 3:1 through 6:14
The sorrow that God felt at having to punish Israel for her sins is reflected by Amos’s perception of the word of the Lord as a lamentation or song of grief. Short of repentance, the doom of the nation of Israel was so certain in the heart and mind of Amos that he sang as though Israel were already dead. Even so, the refrain to the prophet’s funeral song was: “Seek the Lord and live” (Amos 5:6).
What does it mean to seek God? The idea of seeking the Lord is not that of trying to find someone whose whereabouts are unknown. The Bible teaches us that God can be found when we seek Him with all of our heart and with all of our soul.
How then, shall we go about seeking God? Wholehearted endeavor to seek God is marked by daily prayer and Bible study. God’s Word instructs us how to seek God’s face. You will never find God until you head in the right direction. In order to seek the Lord and live, you must turn your feet toward the path of the testimonies of God. To be steadily directed by and through the Word demands nothing less than wholehearted commitment.
Challenge for Today: Will the songs sung at your funeral be songs of mourning or songs of rejoicing?
